RECESSION PAVILION

RECESSION PAVILION

Triennale di Milano

RECESSION PAVILION IS AN ARCHITECTURAL PROJECT DESIGNED FOR THE TRIENNALE DI MILANO DESIGN MUSEUM AS PART OF THE “BROKEN NATURE” EXHIBITION IN 2019.

INSPIRED BY A TRIP TO THE DEAD SEA THE PAVILION WAS DESIGNED TO SHED LIGHT ON THE ISSUE OF OVER - EXPLOITATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR ECONOMIC PURPOSES.

THE ECONOMY AND THE ENVIRONMENT HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LINKED, BUT UNDERSTANDING THESE CONNECTIONS HAS BECOME INCREASINGLY IMPORTANT AS ECONOMIC GROWTH PLACES GREATER DEMAND ON THE WORLD'S NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.

THE "RECESSION PAVILION" WAS DESIGNED TO ADDRESS THE ECONOMIC PHENOMENON OF "OVER - EXPLOITATION" OF THE EARTH'S NATURAL RESOURCES, AND THE WAY THIS METHOD OF ENRICHMENT WILL UNDOUBTEDLY AFFECT THE HUMAN RACE AND THE PLANET IN THE NOT SO FAR FUTURE.

THE ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT OF THE PAVILION DREW INSPIRATION FROM THE IDEA OF AN OASIS AS A FORM OF ENRICHMENT,

AND TRIED TO IMAGINE WHAT A MODERN DAY COMMERCIALIZED OASIS WOULD PROBABLY LOOK LIKE.

INDUSTRIAL OASIS

THE DEFINITION OF OASIS IS A FERTILE OR GREEN SPOT IN THE DESERT SURROUNDING A SOURCE OF WATER. IT REPRESENTS THE IDEA OF A " SHELTER FROM THE STORM ". THE KNOWLEDGE AND THE LOCATION OF OASIS HAS BEEN IMPORTANT

FOR TRADE ROUTES IN DESERT AREAS, AND IS ONE OF THE FIRST EXAMPLES OF MANKIND'S

EXPLOITATION OF NATURAL RESOURCES FOR ECONOMIC PURPOSES.

A SPACE MADE PURELY BY WATER :

THE PAVILION DOESN'T ACT AS AN ARCHITECTURAL OBJECT IN RELATIONSHIP WITH WATER, BUT RATHER AS A TRANSLUCID CONSTRUCTION SHAPED BY THE MOVEMENT OF WATER.

THE PAVILION WALLS ACT AS A TRANSLUCENT WALL OF WATER THAT POURS DOWN FROM THE THICK CONCRETE CEILING TO A REFLECTING POOL, THAT THEN COLLECTS SAID WATER AND TRANSFERS IT BACK TO THE TOP, USING A PUMPING SYSTEM HIDDEN IN THE COPPER TUBING THAT SUPPORTS THE PAVILIONS  LARGE STRUCTURE.

THIS CREATES A CONSTANT WATERFALL EFFECT CREATING BOTH VISUAL AND SOUND SEPARATION FROM THE PAVILION'S SURROUNDING ENVIRONMENT.
